How Do Acoustic Membrane Systems Reduce Noise?

There is a combination of sound absorption mechanisms that can be combined to deliver multiple levels of acoustic performance in an acoustic membrane system

Membrane materials on their own absorb some sound waves
In acoustic membranes, micro-perforations (not to be confused with the larger variety used to create patterns), absorb some energy from sound waves as they pass through and at the same time allow passage of those waves into the membrane cavity
Once in the cavity more absorption of the sound by the building materials takes place.
Additional absorption, and hence increased noise reduction, can be achieved by adding a layer of acoustic material specifically designed to absorb sound.
When backlighting or illumination is required, acoustic light sheets can be used to allow sound waves to reach acoustic backing materials where they will be absorbed.

Velaria Systems takes advantage of these properties to offer different levels of acoustic performance depending on your goals for noise reduction in your space.

Acoustic Absorbing Material – materials designed specifically for absorbing the majority of sound waves that contact their surface.

Acoustic Light Sheets – emit uniform light with a design that allows most sound waves to pass through and reach the acoustic absorbing material.

Acoustic Membranes – the material absorbs some sound while micro-perforations extract energy and allow sound waves into the cavity.

And by ensuring adequate acoustic performance in your ceilings and/or walls, using durable, low maintenance flooring materials like stone or tile won’t result in a cavern of cacophony.

We make it simple for you to choose the level of noise reduction that best suits your design by offering 3 levels of acoustic performance in most of our systems – both illuminated and non-illuminated.

Standard: acoustic performance that is generally superior to many other common finishes such as drywall or plaster and similar to a typical commercial ACT ceiling.
Enhanced: increased acoustic performance that takes advantage of additional acoustic elements to improve system performance.
Ultra: our highest level of acoustic performance that is achieved by optimizing the system using all of the acoustic elements available.

We also understand that there may times when reducing noise is not a critical requirement of your design. For those projects, we also offer systems with a basic level of acoustic performance that offers some noise reduction and fewer system components.
